Review Topic: Accommodations
The very first place we stayed at in the Caribbean was Biras Creek (http://www.biras.com/). It is on a very narrow hilly part of Virgin Gorda (British Virgin Islands) that is cut off from the rest of the island. We stayed in a Grand Suite and they are larger, more luxurious, and a little more secluded. Grand Suites are comparable in size to standard accomodations at Petit St. Vincent and Cap Juluca (which is to say enormous!). Because of the narrowness of this part of the island, there are three separate water areas. The cottages are along the Atlantic, benefiting from the very strong continuous breeze. If you like crashing waves and find them peaceful as I do, there are few places that can give you this same effect. The beach is about a ½ mile to a mile down a path and is usually very quiet. Everybody is provided a bicycle to ride around the property and especially to get to the beach. There are 60 guests and fewer than half go to the beach usually. It is a beautiful crescent on a narrow bay that comes in from the Caribbean. It’s quite lovely and you feel somewhat in the wilderness there (despite the full bar and available food). Biras is American Plan, but that makes sense, because it takes time to get to the rest of the island and you’d have to go by taxi as there are no cars on the Biras part of the island. The dining room is absolutely exquisite on the highest point in the resort with wonderful views of both the Atlantic and Caribbean. Although the service is excellent, it is not as extraordinary as that at Cap Juluca. There is also a tiny harbor where the water taxi brings you and where you can charter a day sail (we did; it was fantastic!). You can take the water taxi to the dock where you can then take a land taxi to the other side of the island and visit the Baths (an amazing rock formation in the water – highly recommended and great snorkeling) or you can get there by boat. You can also take a small motor boat to an entirely secluded beach on a nearby small island or for great snorkeling.
