What a beautiful paradise! I've travelled there twice, once in the spring of 1995 (no kids yet) and once a year later with a fourteen month old (do the math, and no she wasn't conceived there but I was slightly with child on my first visit). Our extended family rented a villa (the same one both times) at Leverick Bay (above the Pussers) and couldn't be happier. To get on a water taxi and visit some of the restaurants not accessible by car was just fantastic, and made it a real adventure. The Bitter End Resort is fun and lively, Mosquito Island is quiet and remote, Biras Creek was elegant. Brunch at Little Dix was lovely! There is almost NO commercial build up on these islands: the resorts are beautifully landscaped and set among groves of palms and gorgeous flowers. Highrises are nonexistent and this isn't a place that you see souvenir shops and tourist traps. Service can be slow but remember you are on island time.
We rented our own little boats for snorkel expeditions most days, it was perfect for me (a beginner), the cousins (10 and 12), yet not boring for the more experienced folks. The scuba divers were happy with the incredible pristine and warm water.
The natives are British citizens, but the American dollar is the currency. Expect to see lots of chickens and goats on the side of the road.
The taxi drivers are wild and will pick up any natives walking down the road for a ride. We once picked up a large group of darling school kids in their uniforms and the squeezed in among us and happily chattered away. That gives you an idea of the size of the taxis: generally a medium sized truck with a canopy over 4-5 benches in the back, seating 15 people easily. The hilly terrain and sharp curves keeps everyone from falling asleep in the otherwise tranquil setting. The air temp is exquisite in the early morning and evenings, wawm without being hot. The daytime temps got quite a bit warmer most days, and we were glad to have shade.
Nothing is cheap here but prices for things didn't shock me.
It's sleepy at night, occasional steel drum bands play at various restaurants. Plan to get up early, be in the sun all day, eat a great meal and fall happily asleep.
