Pros: Beautiful beaches. Friendly people. Excellent food. Very safe. Wonderful villas.
Cons: Are there any? Not too much night life. A little pricey - but worth it!
The Bottom Line: This is the perfect place for a couple looking for a quiet romantic vacation. Rent a private villa and a jeep, then explore on your own!

| moraler's Full Review: British Virgin Islands |
My husband and I rented a villa on Tortola for our Honeymoon in early May 2000. We couldn't have picked a more perfect spot. We stayed at Villa Laguna in Apple Bay on the North West end of the island (villalaguna.com or cvillas.com). It was beautiful - with sunset views, its own pool, and just a few minutes walk to the water. There were no overlooking neighbors in any direction. We loved having so much space and don't think we'll ever rent a simple hotel room again!
The BVI beaches were amazing, with water that was warm, clear, and gentle. We loved Smuggler's Cove, which had an honor bar consisting of a refrigerator with cold drinks, a cigar box full of money, and no one to watch over it. Brewer's Bay was great too, especially because we were the only ones on the beach.
We had a blast snorkeling and sailing on the Patouche II (Patouche.com). Joe and Julie (the crew) were very friendly, informative, and made us a delicious lunch. We'd never snorkeled before and were amazed at how easy it was and how much there is to see just a few feet below the surface. We hit the Indians, and areas offshore of Norman and Peter Islands. We took also ferry trips to see Jost Van Dyke and the Baths of Virgin Gorda. The Baths are amazing, especially the Devil's Bay Trail. We lazed around White Bay Beach on JVD, and enjoyed the hammocks at the Sandcastle.
The restaurants were not as expensive as we expected. We especially liked the Sugar Mill (although this was pricey) and Sebastian's by the Sea. Both of these restaurants were within walking distance of our villa. Pusser's is a little over-rated; it was like eating at a Houilihans or a TGI Fridays. Grocery stores prices were high, so it was far more tempting to find moderately priced restaurants. The seafood was delicious, but there's plenty of other options if you don't care for it.
We had plenty of lazy time at the beach, but lots to do if you're looking for adventure. We especially liked the uncrowded beaches and that BVI does not have the touristy feel that some of the other Caribbean islands do. There are no high rise hotels, huge resorts, or U.S. franchises. There's not a whole lot of shopping either, but St. Thomas is a ferry ride away. BVI is very safe, and we picked up hitchhikers. Several times we went swimming and left keys, camera, etc. on the beach with no worries. At no time did anyone ask us for money or make us feel unsafe in any way. The Islanders were very friendly.
Two sets of friends have honeymooned here after hearing our stories and seeing our pictures. We'll be back again soon!
