| austinv's Full Review: British Virgin Islands |
For two weeks in July of 2002 me, my brother, my grandparents, and my aunt and uncle lived off of a 52 foot Beneteau sailboat in the British Virgin Islands (the BVI). This was a trip I'll never forget.
We chartered the boat through Conch Charters in Road Town, Tortola (the only sizable town in the BVI). I won't bore you with the details of my trip, instead I'll try to supply an overview to help you decide if a trip to the BVI is worth the money.
Every one of the islands in the BVI has something to offer, from a beautiful secluded beach to be lounged upon, to a maze of geological anomalous rocks jutting twenty feet skyward, just begging to be explored. There are coral reefs everywhere, and some spots are so thick with tropical fish that the sunlight is completely blocked out.
The BVI are the bareboat chartering capital of the world (a bareboat charter is when you rent a sailboat to use without hiring a captain or crew, and is for EXPERIENCED SAILORS ONLY), which means that there is no better place on earth for sailing enthusiasts. Everywhere you look sailboats are to be found. Ports cater to the sailor and ample provisions are to be found. The island are close enough to hop from one to another in a few hours of sailing. Also, the wind never lets up, but it doesn't get too gusty either. If sailing is your hobby, then there is no better place for it.
Snorkelers and scuba divers will also feel quite at home in the BVI. Reefs areeverywhere, ranging in depth from 3 ft. to over 100 ft. The shallow reefs allow a first timer to explore the wonders of the coral, while many deep reefs are to be found for the avid diver. In addition, to reefs, many shipwrecks can be dived on, including the R.M.S. Rhone, the most famous wreck in the BVI.
If diving isn't your thing, then you can still distract yourself with a hike through one of the several national parks, a stroll through a quaint Carribean village, or an afternoon lounging at one of the BVI's world class resorts.
In the BVI, there is never a shortage of beautiful scenery, and one never tires of looking upon it. In short, if you can afford this trip, by all means take it. It is pretty expensive, but once there money will never even cross your mind.
