Review Topic: Overview
I moved to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands in 1978, and for the next 20 years was a permanent resident. Now that I have moved back to the States, I often feel a twinge of pain, deep in my soul, especially when I catch a glimpse of the islands on a TV commercial, or in a Boating Magazine. Oh, I know that exact place, I'll say -- I snorkeled right there on that little point, holding tight the hand of one of my slightly anxious charter guest ladies as we swam out from the beach at Devil's Bay on Virgin Gorda.
Once you have been to these islands, I guarantee you will always carry the memories of gentle tradewinds, peaceful hospitable people, beautiful clear waters, quiet anchorages, sandy beaches, wonderful snorkeling, and so much more in your memories forever.
Please fly quickly there, and stay where you will. Maybe I'm a bit prejudiced, but I think a Charter Vacation on a boat is the best way to go. You can go with a crew that will be your hosts, your friends, your guides and your chefs, or if you have some boating experience, you can bareboat either a sail or motor yacht, cook sometimes, and eat out a lot. With a charter vacation, you will visit all of these little lovely gems of islands, many still uninhabited except for the birds, and the goats - snorkel the caves at Norman Island, anchor in Great Harbour at Peter Island, dive the Wreck of the Rhone, Climb through the Bathes on Virgin Gorda, and then Snorkel there, Visit the Bitter End up at North Sound on Virgin Gorda, overnight at Cane Garden Bay and look up at the little house on Soldiers Hill that I wanted one day to live in; Visit Foxy at Jost Van Dyke, and don't forget Bomba Shack ... If you are a party type person, the full moon party is not to be missed. If you are not a boatie type, there are lovely rental villas on Tortola and Jost, and Virgin Gorda, and lots of wonderful little hotels everywhere. It doesn't really matter a lot where you are .. just suck in that wonderful island air, eat some Rotis, drink some Pusser's Rum and put some of it in your pancake syrup for breakfast.
I have traveled here, and traveled there, and there is no-where else that I have found that beats the BVI. Go in October and find calm seas, and wonderful snorkeling; celebrate Halloween at the Pussers in Soaper's Hole; go in November and celebrate Thanksgiving; go at Christmas or New Years and see all of the huge yachts with celebrity guests on board; go in March, go in April, go in May, and don't be afraid to visit during the summer months of June, July and August. You are more likely to encounter a hurricane in Florida, than here in the islands. Just go - and I wish you lots of double rainbows, happy cruising and wonderful fun.
You will love my beloved BVIs -- I miss them and everyone there.
