My family and I are sailors born and raised. We own our own thirty seven foot Tartan sailboat in New England, so we decided to charter a boat in the Caribbean.
Since then, we have been there approximately 8 times, and every year it gets better and better. We always take American Airlines through Miami and then on to San Juan. From there we take a small local jet to Virgin Gorda. After a twenty minute cab ride that twists around the mountainous island, we arrive at the Moorings charters headquarters. We spend the night in a hotel room by the water and leave the next morning. We usually charter a 47 foot sailboat, which is perfect for a group of about five. If you are planning on chartering a boat in the caribbean, I strongly suggest the Moorings because of their excellent service, quality and selection of boats, and their fine hotel rooms.
Once we are out on the water, we are free to go anywhere we like whenever we like, and we take in our beautiful surroundings. There are many islands in the BVI, all of which are fairly close together so that you won't have to do excessive sailing. On average, it takes two hours to sail from one island to the next. Every island offers excellent snorkeling and most have cute little beach bars. My favorite part about the BVI is that it is mostly untouched land, so you won't find a McDonalds on Jost Van Dyke. It's the perfect place to relax and have a good time.
If you have the extra money, I would suggest getting a cook to go along with you because the Moorings makes excellent food and the people are so friendly. It also makes the trip more interesting and enjoyable to have a native to tell you where the best sites are and the history of the islands.
For all you over worked businessmen and businesswomen, this trip is for you. Bring the kids along and let the atmosphere take you hostage. It's a great place to relax and let all of your worries go. Don't worry about what time of year to take your vacation, because down there on the equator, the weather is perfect all the time. Don't wait, call the Moorings now, and if you have no idea how to sail, just ask for a crew to help you out. When you land on an island, they get off and spend the night sleeping on the beach - I'm not kidding.
