| larry3's Full Review: Bodden Town Pirates' Caves |
Let me start by saying I've been to Grand Cayman several times and it's one of my favorite islands of the Caribbean. There are tons of beautiful places and people to experience during your visit there. But unless you're 3 years old, you'll find the 'Bodden Town Pirate Caves' a total waste of time and money. I don't remember the exact price, but whatever it was, it was too much. Here's the quick tour...
First, you'll walk into a gift shop boasting cheesy plastic pirates coins, rubber spiders, and seashells. This is where you'll encounter the grim faced cashier that takes your money and sends you into what is basically the back yard of the small house. (I can only assume she was grim faced from the comments made to her after people went through the "pirate caves").
A winding dirt path takes you through several mini dried up corel overhangs (not really caves at all). In many cases these overhangs are enhanced with gloppy concrete to make them more cave-like. Inside each one you'll find rubber pirate dummies and crudely built boxes anchored in concrete, which are supposed to represent treasure chests. (The fake pirate coins concreted into the boxes tipped us off as to what they were "supposed" to be). I seem to also remember the requisite pirate sword, also anchored in concrete. An additional note; WATCH YOUR HEAD. If you're taller than 5', you'll have to duck a lot or lose some scalp to the sharp overhangs.
At the time when I visited, there was also a mean tempered parrot, (probably tired of being tortured by tourists), that would bow his head like he wanted you to pet him. And then in a FLASH he'd try to BITE your fingers! I was startled, but not surprised that he wasn't happy to be left out in the heat of the day.
If you have VERY small children, they might find the 'pirate caves' amusing. But if you're an adult, a MUCH better option is a restaurant you'll find just a few hundred feet more up the road on the right (if you're heading west to east). It's a picturesque little stilted hut surrounded by palm tress and easy to miss. But the panoramic ocean views from the tables are like something you'd see on a postcard. And the menu includes a wonderful blend of local dishes. I personally recommend the catch of the day prepared Cayman style. Magnificent !!!
