"Having a great time. Wish you were here." Postmarked: Hell, Grand Cayman.
Yes, folks there really is a Hell. Grand Cayman. There's really not much to it, but it's one of those things that you just have to do. It's interesting, kind of fun, and worth the trip.
Where is Hell?
It's in a remote part of Grand Cayman, down past the turtle farm.
What's in Hell?
Other than a bunch of tourists who want to send postcards back home with a cool postmark, not too much.
There is the original Hell post office. It's a tiny wooden building that has been turned into a souvenir shop. Every possible type of Hell or devil souvenir imaginable can be found here. There are lots of post cards that proclaim "Greetings from Hell!" along with a shopkeeper suitably attired in a red devil costume.
There's a fun devil cut-out standing in front of the store, so you can pose for your picture in Hell.
Here we also bought our post cards and stamps, then walked outside the see the "attraction" of Hell. It's basically a field of black volcanic rocks that look like charred, jagged remains of ancient times. It's really a unique and pretty ugly sight. Thinking back, it looks a lot like the surface of the giant meteorite in Armageddon.
This is definitely a tourist trap. Tour busses had covered up the parking lot of the current post office next door. The office was booming with business when we went inside to mail our postcards back home. I was glad we didn't have to stand in line there to buy anything.
Truly the Postal Service From Hell
Although we mailed our postcards early in our vacation,we still managed to beat them home by several days. I only wished I had carried the address of people I didn't like. I would have loved to have mailed them a postcard from Hell inscribed, "Having a great time. Really wish you were here." Okay, so I wouldn't have really sent them, but it was sure fun thinking about it anyway!
