Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Back in 1968-70, I was a young naval officer taking a break from law school courteous of the Vietnam War. The Navy, in its infinite wisdom, made this English Major an Engineering Officer and sent me to the Mediterranean rather than Southeast Asia. The vehicle of transport was a WWII tanker, "The Mr. Roberts" Navy if you know the classic book and movie. But before any ship was deployed, it went through "REFTRA" (refresher training), a nautical boot camp of damage control and other war defense exercises held off the coast of GITMO.
I had the experience of two such intense sessions at Guantanamo, and a handful of hours of "liberty" on the base. My two most intense memories were of our Navigation Officer, who had been in the Cuban Navy (and the Bay of Pigs invasion) standing quietly on the ship's bridge, just a few miles from family he couldn't visit, and a year or so later, Easter sunrise service at the base, surrounded by the minefields.
I am a fan of great Cuban music. Saw the Buena Vista Social Club in Buenos Aires and Amherst, Massachusetts. Some day, hopefully soon, I hope the gates will be open, the minefields will be cleared, and for everyone's sake we can get on together again.
