As part of our cruise this January, we stopped at Curacao as one of our ports. We decided to do the "Animal Encounters" as an excursion. This tour took us to the Seaquarium. On the outside it didn't look like much, but inside was a different story. We signed up to go scuba diving. My husband and I both had never done it and were terribly nervous about trying it. There are two programs one can choose: snorkeling or scuba diving with the animals in the sea. Both allow you to feed the stingrays, sharks, fish, and turtles. We felt the scuba would be more of an adventure. Our instructors were terrific. In ten minutes, we got a crash course on scuba, and had our equipment on. We then were given time to float in the water to get used to our gear. I was not comfortable right away, so an instructor stayed by my side until I felt okay. After a few minutes, the instructors deflated our vests, and we were on our way to the bottom of the seaquarium, which was only twelve feet deep. When we got down, the stingrays came right to us and wanted to play. They are very docile, although they look frightening. I was in awe at how close I was to all of these creatures! Everyone was given a bag of fish to feed the animals, and it was the greatest experience. There were different areas of the dive, so in each area we were able to feed different animals. The first area was the stingrays and the fish. Next, we swam under a semi-submarine boat (for spectators) and came to a fence with a thick glass wall on top of it. There were holes in a row in the glass to feed the sharks. After feeding the sharks, we moved onto the sea turtles, and then we came to the surface and got out of our gear. At the end of our dive, we watched a video of our dive, and were able to get a copy of the video before disembarking from our tour.
This was the most wonderful excursion of our whole cruise!
