Dear ltkbs, we understand that the lifestyle in Jamaica is much different. In fact, I am a well-traveled person and have lived-in and visited over 25 countries. I am very familiar with the variety of cultures and lifestyles abundant on our planet. My main complaint about Beaches is that it is not worth the money. Had I paid half of what I did, it might be a somewhat different story. But for the price, it was not worth it. The brochure and travel agents were misleading and the vacation did not live up to our expectations. And just because some of your friends say they have never had certain things happen to them does not mean it did not happen to us. I assure you that everything in my epinion is 100% true – and I am not a person that tends to embellish stories. From your comments it appears that you did not read my opinion very carefully...

You said, “Oh, if you want "top shelf" booze, dah... you need to ask for it just like in the states!” I never said you couldn’t get top shelf booze. I complained that the selection of top-shelf liquors was pretty limited and that all their mixed drinks were just mixed with flavored syrups rather than actual juice.

You then said, “And, scuba gear...nothing wrong with it...maybe the "beautiful people" should bring their own!” How would you know if there was ‘nothing wrong’ with my scuba gear? Were you there? I am a PADI Certified Advanced Diver and to this day I have never had any problems with gear except for when I was at this resort.

“And , everyone who goes knows ahead of time the long trip to the resort..u dont want to take that long, shut up, sit down and pay $133 to fly there in 20 minutes.” Well, I never complained about the ‘long trip’ to the resort. In fact, I quite enjoyed seeing the country on our way there. What I complained about was being asked for a tip after the driver was done brown-nosing us. The resort specifically advertises “no tips!” during your entire visit and the airport transfer is included as part of the visit.

In the future, consider reading opinions more carefully before commenting on them. Most of what you said had nothing to do with what I wrote in my epinion.

Re: Sandals/Beaches "luxury" is overstated (Reply to this comment)

We were, indeed, offered drugs by the Beaches staff. My husband was approached several times by a waiter who asked him if he liked to "Party," (and no, he did not mean "I am throwing a party at my house tonight and thought I'd invite some of the hotel guests"). We were sitting in the dining area during these offerings.

We didn't wander down the beach very much because all the resorts had security allowing only their guests to pass through. At Beaches, non-guests are not allowed to be on the premises (this is so that the guests are not pestered by annoying people trying to sell things or braid your hair).

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I only just saw this comments section today.

I received a letter from Beaches full of excuses and NO APOLOGIES. They said we must have gotten sick from the water (we only drank bottled water!) and that people often get traveler's sickness (I am a WORLD traveler, grew-up overseas, and have never gotten sick!). They said their scuba gear is frequently monitored. They made a couple other mediocre comments AND IGNORED ALL OF OUR OTHER COMPLAINTS! I guess it's better to ignore a customer's comments than to address the issue and admit fault...

The travel agency ended up give us two $50 vouchers to book another vacation with them again. Gee, $50? Do you know how much an All-Inclusive vacation costs? What a joke. Wasn't even worth the effort to write the letter to the companies. (Our vouchers have since 'expired' and I have thrown them away).

Another example of how companies promote mediocre products to be the very best -- and charge as if they were.
I'd be very interested to hear how the two companies responded.
Excellent review.

Sandals/Beaches "luxury" is overstated (Reply to this comment)
by CozzifanTutti
I believe that the degree of "luxury" promised by the Sandals/Beaches chain is highly overstated, and when travel agents sell these properties, they lead people to assume that "six apples" means what, say, five stars would mean in the U.S.

Some of your complaints are, I think, a bit out of line. I doubt strongly that you were offered drugs by the staff at Beaches. Staff at A/I would never put themselves at risk like that. If you were offered while walking down the beach, or even at waterline, which is public, this is not the resort's fault. Say "No, thanks", and be done with it.

Drinks at A/I resorts tend NOT to be 'top-shelf' liquors unless specifically asked. If this is how the place was sold to you, it was incorrect.

My experience with Sandals food is that it IS mediocre. Often at larger resorts, they fly in all the food, so you do not get the kind of locally-grown produce you'd get at a smaller hotel.

In terms of large A/I hotels, I think the Issa Resorts (Couples Negril/Ocho Rios and Swept Away) give you more for your money. But still, "luxury" in Jamaica is quite probably a step down from, say, "luxury" in New York.

My condolences, and thanks for the warning! (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for the very detailed review. It is the latest negative review I have read of an all-inclusive resort. My wife and I are thinking about taking a trip to Jamaica, but if we do, we will stay well away from the all-inclusive resorts.

Cheers,

Nat

What an awful trip! I'm sorry you didn't have a better time. You'll just have to take your "honeymoon" over again.... ;)

Thanks for steering me WELL away from this resort!!

Although it's hard to imagine that there were not more positive things experienced at this resort, which probably should have been mentioned to be fair. Sorry, you didn't have a better trip!
