We traveled to Swept Away during the month of June, which was a bit hot and a little bit muggy, but overall a good time to go from a weather perspective. We choose Swept Away based on the recommendation of our travel agent and a video that he provided regarding the resort. We also chose it because it was solely for couples and did not permit children.
We flew into Montego Bay and took the Swept Away provided shuttle to the resort. After a long flight from the West Coast, this extra hour and a half on a bouncing winding road was not very welcome. We arrived at the resort somewhat late in the evening and checked in with relatively little delay. The lobby decor was lovely and inviting with rustic, tropical feel to it.
Dinner in the main dining room was winding up and we quickly sat down to grab something to eat. Unfortunately, our first experience with Swept Away was with the food. It was considerably disappointing, with a definite mass production feel to it. The main dining room is a buffet and there is only one restaurant (at least at that time) that took reservations and served a "sit down" dinner. The best places to eat were the "beach grill" and the casual restaurant that served pizzas (oh and the bar next to the sports area pool). Although a full bar was included in the price and the bar sported what appeared to be brand name liquor, I could have sworn that the "Absolut" vodka was not in fact, Absolut. It just didn't taste like it. In addition, the foo-foo tropical drinks and rum drinks were disappontingly weak. Needless to say, I drank a lot of bottled beer.
The food aside, the rest of the resort was lovely! The activities were extremely varied and diverse and there was not a wait for most of them. We spent most of our time scuba diving (included), playing tennis, swimming, sunning (on the gorgeous part of seven mile beach it is on), and various other watersports. We really enjoyed the scuba crew (outsourced by the resort but on property) and the destinations. The pools were nice, but pretty small. One thing to note -- when it came to meeting people and making "resort friends" we were often thwarted by language barriers as there was a LARGE European contingent (mostly Germans and Italians) at the resort.
The rooms were very nice, with a warm feel, huge balcony and comfortable bed. The decor was warm, inviting but simple in taste. Every night the maids would turn down the bed and leave a lovely flower on the pillows. Overall the housekeeping service was top notch and every thing was well swept and clean.
Overall, Swept Away was a nice experience, but not the full luxury treatment we expected to have based on the advertising. I wavered between recommending and not recommending based on the food and bar issues and the lack of a true luxury feel. However, I think it is worth the trip if you can get a bargain rate.
