| saby's Full Review: Jamaica |
2 years ago over the thanksgiving week (Thanksgiving of 1997) I went to Jamaica with my husband and another couple. We wanted to go to a place that would be affordable, yet still nice, and where the four of us could relax, go swimming, catch up (the other couple lived across the country from us) and enjoy the Jamaican culture, food and sun.
We researched for a while and finally ended up deciding on renting a house in Ocho Rios. We found out about the house through our alumni magazine, and it turned out to be a phenomenal deal. It costs us 900.00 per couple for the entire week (7 nights) and included maid service, a cook, and security night watchmen. The house was located in the hills above Ocho Rios bay, with a spectacular view, and a pool on a terrace that also had a spectacular view.
Before getting to the house we were all a little bit hesitant - fearing that the information that we had read about the house would be exaggerated and we would arrive in Ocho Rios to a dumpy house in a bad area. BUT …we were PLEASANTLY surprised. The house was beautiful, the cook and maid very warm and wonderful people, and the view and pool exactly as described. We gave the cook $100.00 per couple for food for the week, and she went out and did all the shopping for us.
Everyday we were treated to breakfast tea out on the veranda, a 4 -5-course breakfast, and then a 5-6-course dinner. Because they served us 2 big meals a day, there was no need for lunch as well. We often just stopped when we were out at the beach and picked up jerked chicken and pork for the jerk stands in the town. Renting the house essentially allowed us to feel as if we were in our own private all inclusive resort, without having to deal with any of the negatives of an all inclusive resort (people you don't like, sketchy food, too many organized activities, not enough privacy).
The only major CON with the house was that it was not right on the beach. We had to drive down to the beaches, and then drive back to the house. Because Jamaica has so many all0-inclusive resorts along the beaches, we also had a hard time finding nice private secluded beaches. Many of the secluded beaches had a lot of rubbish on the beach, as there was no one cleaning it up after high tide every day. Had we known we would have purchased day passes at one of the all-inclusive resorts, and used it as our daytime beach. That way we would have really had the best of both worlds!
