| ehgyal's Full Review: Culebra |
My boyfriend and I visited Culebra at the end of April for four days. We took the 20 minute Isla Nena flight from San Juan which is not for the weak-heart! However, the views of the Puerto Rican coastline are absolutely breathtaking and it is extremely convenient if you are only vacationing for a couple of days.
Upon arrival, I quickly realized that we were on "island time." Leave your watch behind! Things are not rushed and people move very slowly and you just have to FLOW with what happens.
We rented a jeep from Jerry's Jeeps. He drove us around and gave us a detailed, in-depth orientation of the island and told us where we could find the best snorkeling, restaurants etc. He even provided us with a special home-made map complete with notes. Very helpful.
Our accomodation, Harbour View Villas, was beautiful. The villas rest on the mountainside and are private. They are rustic and simple A frame villas - very open --- and as a result, there is always a warm Caribbean breeze blowing through the villa. The bedroom is located upstairs and has a nice balcony and beautiful huge windows that open up to the sky. One night I almost had a heart attack because I thought I heard people walking around outside our villa and it turned out to be two wild horses! Those are the kinds of magical moments you will have in Culebra.
One thing that surprised me was that Culebra is so safe that there were no locks on our villa! I'm from New York, so it took me a minute to get used to that (:
The beaches on Culebra are some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Everyday, we went to a different beach. Playa Zoni is gorgeous and completely deserted. Playa Flamenco is a white sand dream with crystal blue water. The best beach of all however can be found on Culebrita. You have to take a water taxi out there ($20 each). Once you are dropped off, walk to the other side of the island and you will find Playa Tortuga, a horse-shoe shaped beach with the most beautiful water...different shades of blue....hardly any rocks or reefs....just pure ocean. The snorkeling is excellent on Culebrita too.
My boyfriend and I also kayaked out to Cayo Luis Pena. That was some hard work. Kayaking on the open ocean takes strength and some guts. But once you reach the island and you are the only ones there.....it is all worth it.
All in all, the beaches are what make Culebra such an incredible place. If you are a water person and you love the ocean then go to Culebra.
As for the nightlife in Culebra, there isn't much. The only thing I found exciting was the live drumming at Mamacita's on Friday night. Those drummers are incredible and the Pina Colada's are delicious. My advice is to follow the locals and you will find the nightlife. Mammacita's seems to be the happening spot though.
