You don't come to St. John for the cuisine, but you'll find it's surprisingly good. Often the surroundings make the meal, an in the case of Caneel Bay's Turtle Bay restaurant. Food on St. John is expensive, as it is throughout the U.S.V.I., and usually the best bet is to keep it simple.
The best view you're going to find to dine by is on the terrace or in the air-conditioned dining room at Le Chateau de Bordeaux. The rustic cabin is practically a glorified tree house, magically transformed into an ultraromantic, elegant aerie by wrought-iron chandeliers, lace tablecloths, and antiques. The chefs mettily blend several culinary traditions, and their creations appeal equally to the eye and palate. The restaurant is located in Bordeaux Mountain.
Come to Paradiso for great Italian food. Located on the upper level of Mongoose Junction, it strives to create a European ambiance, with vaulted ceilings and cross beams, stone walls, and polished hardwood floors, but the casually attired crowd gives it a decidedly American feel. This popular place also has an outdoor terrace lined with tables.
On the ground floor of Wharfside Village, overlooking the harbor and just inches from the Cruz Bay beach, is this welcome newcommer, Saychelles. Choose from numerous appetizers, such as marinated goat cheese, marinated calamari, and beef carpaccio, for starters. Your main dish could be the standard spaghetti Bolognese, capellini primavera, or one of four other pastas-or something more inventive: Try the shrimp sauteed in gin, or the trademark dish, Saychelles bouillabaisse.
This delightful local eatery is in the middle of nowhere, Friis Bay. Taxi rates are prohibitive, so drive here in a rental car-it's worth the trip. This lilac and maroon trellised restaurant, adorned with local artwork, is swept by cooling sea breezes; you can also eat outside on a tiny beach anchored by sea grape trees.
These are the best restaurant choices on the undeveloped Island of St. John, if you need any further info and any of the U.S.V.I or B.V.I do not hesitate to E-mail me and I will post a review on any of the island.
