The Belvedere Palaces are located in the heart of Vienna, Austria. They are within walking distance of the Ring. This elegant palace is one of the masterpieces of Baroque Art, and is a must-see for tourists traveling through Vienna. The Palace was built in the 18th century. Tickets cost around 100 Austrian Schillings for the whole place, and buying individual tickets for each section works out to be more expensive. The Belvedere is closed on Mondays.
The Palace is set on a vast expanse of land, and the Palace Gardens are a good place to begin exploring the place. As soon as I walked into the palace, the first thing that struck me was its amazing architecture. The interior of the palace is rich and has high walls with exquisite carving. Majestic staircases lead from one level to the next. There is a beautiful view of Vienna, especially the Inner ring from the windows of the Belvedere.
The Österreichische Galerie (Austrian Gallery) is in the Belvedere Palace.
The Untere Belvedere (Lower Belvedere) houses a collection of Medieval and Baroque Art. It includes paintings and sculpture from around 15th century to the end of The Gothic Age. One of the most important pieces of work here is the Znaimer Alterpiece, attributed to an Austrian wood-carver. The work represents the events describing Good Friday, and is exquisitely carved. Works of Conrad Liab can also be seen in the Lower Belvedere.
In the Obere Belvedere (Upper Belvedere), famous 19th and 20th century works are on display. Gustav Klimt is the most important Austrian Artist whose works adorn the Belvedere. You can see his most famous work "The Kiss" here. Some other Klimt works I loved are "Judith I", "Beethoven Frieze" and "Serpent I". Other Austrian expressionist artists represented are Egon Schiele, Richard Gerstl and Kokoschka. There are a few works of Hans Markat too. Many international artists, mostly impressionists and post-impressionists are also represented in this section. Some of the works of the international artists that can be viewed here are Vincent van Gogh, Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet.
The Atelier Augarten at the Belvedere houses a museum of Conteporary Art. There is also a sculpture garden at Belvedere, a couple of cafes, and a museum shop.
A visit to the Belvedere shouldn't take more than 3-4 hours at the maximum, unless you are interested in going to all the museums. Since its not too far from the other attractions like the Rathaus and Stephansdom, its should be on the list of every visitor to Vienna.
