Vienna is known as the musical capital of the world thanks to the yields of Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Haydn and many more composers born in this magnificent city.
I usually do not like capital cities because of internationalism and crowding. I like to see a country by visiting smaller towns which are more characteristic and show more of their way of life. Vienna, though, is such a sprawling, architecturally fine city with friendly people and lots to do, it is hard not to like it. Even though an American rodeo was one of the first thing I saw there (which I enjoyed very much), there were many more AUSTRIAN things to see. Very talented musical hopefuls make there music on the street wherever you go. The Viennese never tire of music, there is always a music festival happening somewhere in Vienna.
Churches, museums, parks and a great amusement park called the Prater grace the city. The Prater was an experience. There was no admission fee but the prices for the rides were pretty high and it was very crowded.
If you wish you can visit the homes of Mozart and Beethoven which are open to the public. If you like the Opera, you can't miss one, if you don't, go anyway, its a fun experience.
Restaurants and hotels vary. We found a small guest house type hotel with moderate prices. We spent a lot of money on food but we did splurge a little and went to a couple of the finer eateries.
One caution; the Viennese are quite reckless drivers. We got into a car wreck, luckily not serious, when a driver u-turned and hit us head on. The rental company didn't even blink an eye. They just put us into another one right away like it happened all the time.
Even though we had a bad experience there, we had a great stay in Vienna and this is a capital city that I would return to anytime.
