Whenever I go to Vienna, it seems to rain and the days I spent there last summer were positively blustery, cold and wet. Long outdoor strolls were out of the question. Here's what we did:
1) Toured the imperial apartments and the imperial silver collection at the Hofburg. The Hofburg was the city palace of the Hapsburg emperors. While not as grand or beautiful as the Schonbrunn palace, just outside the city, this palace is still splendid. There are beautiful examples of the furniture of that period and lovely Winterhalter paintings of the Empress Elisabeth whose face adorns everything in souvenir shops throughout Vienna from postcards to chocolates. Adjacent to the imperial apartments is the fantastic imperial silver collection which encompasses everything from china plates to gilded dinner ware to the empress's chamber pot. An interesting combination of the artistic and the mundane.
2) Exposed ourselves to art at the Kunsthistoriches Museum (Museum of Fine Arts). Everything about this museum was grand; from the grand staircase to the grand cupola to the grand collection. The art is magnificent with Dutch, German and Italian paintings by such masters as Holbein, Breughel, Vermeer, Durer, Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto. Grand paintings displayed in the grand manner.
3) Spent the evening at a heurige house in Grinzing. Grinzing is a close suburb of Vienna. A heurige house is a restaurant serving its own new wine. We dashed down the short main street of Grinzing until we heard the happy wheezing of accordion music and we went in. It was a lovely evening of music, wine and weiner schnitzl. Dessert was a very good creation called a Kaiser Schmarr'n. It was a light pancake cut into bite size pieces and covered with a plum compote.
Imperial splendor, fine art, wine, music and the day finished off by a great dessert. These are among the reasons I will continue to come back to Vienna despite the rain.
