Zagreb is the Croatian capital city, and also is the biggest. It has a population less than a 1 000 000 people.
And it has a long history.
History background:
In year 1094. AD Zagreb is first mentioned in written documents. In 1242 Zagreb got a status of a free royal city, from the Croatian-Hungarian king Bela the Fourth.
In year 1557 Zagreb is mentioned in written documents for the first time as capitol city of Croatia.
Year 1669 the priests have opened first Academy and high school. That year is considered as a year when Zagreb University was opened (Zagrebacko sveuciliste).
25. June 1991. Croatian parliament (Hrvatski Sabor) declares Croatian independency and Zagreb as capitol of Croatia.
Zagreb is positioned on river Sava, bellow a mountain Medvednica where is located old medieval city called Medvedgrad.
The city's main square is Trg bana Jelacica, where cars aren't allowed. There are many pubs where you can relax and gather strength for further exploration.
If you look around you will see a cathedral on the hill. This cathedral is the center of Kaptol, one of oldest Zagreb's neighborhoods. Cathedral was built in 1094. On Kaptol you will find many stands with religious souvenirs (paintings, sculptures, and so on).
Main tram station is located on Tomislav square, where is also the main train station. Tomislav was first Croatian king, crowned in 924 AD. You will find a large parks here too. There are few hotels nearby (hotel Opera, Esplanade, As, International, hotel Sheraton...).
If you visit Zagreb, I recommend that you visit HNK (Hrvatsko narodno kazaliste) and the Zagreb's ZOO is nice attraction. You can visit the Saint Marko's church, near cathedral and you will be surprised.
There are a lot of places to go shopping and trams can take you almost anywhere.
Also, Zagreb has several museums and galleries which are also interesting.
Theaters are opened almost every night, best theaters are: HNK (Croatian national theatre), Theater Comedy (Kazaliste Komedija), Dramsko kazaliste Gavella (Drama theatre Gavella)...
There are few rent-a-car agencies and several restaurants. If you get lost, there are tourist maps around the city and you can see the exact location where you are or just ask somebody. Most of young people speak English, so they won't have the trouble explaining.
If you miss the internet, you can relax in several internet cafés - VIP, Aquarius, Art net club, Charlie net, Ergonet....
Zagreb is relatively safe city. You will see police in all areas so there is no reason to be concerned.
Nightlife is exciting - there are several discos, casinos, pubs and cocktail bars to visit. Some of them are:
casinos - International, Royal, Vega casino; discos: Aquarius, Cab club, Gap club, Mocvara, Saloon...; pubs: Garage pub, Godot pub, Hole-in-one, Movie pub, Londoner pub...; cocktail bars: Baobab, Indy's, Papaya, Tolkien's.
If you plan a trip to Zagreb I would recommend that you also visit www.zagreb.hr and get more information there.
