A perfect way to escape the summer crowds of Prague is to take a day trip to Kutna Hora. $3 train round trip as of Aug '99. It is about 1 hour away from Prague. I visited Kutna Hora in August of '99 after one girl I met on a Vienna-Prague train recommended it.
Kutna Hora has two major points of interest. One is the "kostnice" (in Czech)-- a small Gothic church decorated with bones of 40,000 people. One local woodcarver in the 19th century gathered the bones of killed soldiers and arranged them in the forms of bells, a chandelier, monstrances, even the Schwarzenberg coat-of-arms, etc. This is quite a macabre sight, I must tell you.
The second point of interest is the Cathedral of St. Barbara--one of the most beautiful churches of Europe, which took over 150 years to complete. It's not very impressive inside, but from outside it is full of grace and power (it is built on a cliff) !
It's a 2 mile walk from the "kostnice" to the cathedral. After you are done with visiting the sights, I recommend a walk through the woods across the "moat" from the Cathedral. You will get a great view from there, and it is also a great way to relax and forget about crazy tourist crowds of Prague. You will find some locals and very few tourists.
