When it comes to buying tickets for theater shows, Leicester Square in London is similar to Times Square in New York. Each square has a booth that sells 1/2 price tickets on the day of the performance. There is a 2 pounds service charge, and it’s CASH ONLY.
The ticket booth is open Mon-Sat 12pm--6:30pm, Sun. 12pm--3:30pm. I suggest to get there much earlier than 12, because the line (or the queue, in British English) starts a few hours prior to the time tickets go on sale.
Your choice of seats is limited. These are the tickets that were not sold in the theater’s box office--they could be front row (very expensive) or all the way in the back (very cheap). Which is why I recommend to get to Leicester Square booth as early as you can, so you can buy the best of what’s left.
The prices for theater tickets in London are bargains, compared to Broadway shows in New York. 1/2 price tickets for musicals cost between 16 and 20 pounds, and for plays between 12 and 16 pounds.
One important note: The booth doesn’t sell tickets for every show. For example, you won’t find tickets for Phantom of the Opera or Les Miserables. Also, it doesn’t sell tickets for any performance at the Globe theater. Nevertheless, you can find tickets for really awesome shows, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t get tickets for the “famous” productions.
