London Town (Reply to this comment)
by adriennefoster, in Hotels & Travel
...Yes indeed, It was a train. We took it from an underground station in London, in what is known as the tube. Windsor and Eaton are just across a small bridge from each other....
Well, Phil, if we're going to get really nitpicky here, you took the tube to Waterloo, which is an underground and train station combined, then took the train to Windsor. The tube does not go as far as Berkshire.
Good review. I'm glad to see you loaded with detail on your personal experiences visiting the city. Too many of the reviews on this topic are just repeating information I can find elsewhere on a marketing website or tourbook.

I love the way you've set it out, so clear and easy to read.
Glad you liked London. I've lived there for five years now and still have loads to see!

Re: Your Trips To London .... (Reply to this comment)

London was a lot of fun. I don't recommend renting a car while staying in town. The difficulty of learning how to drive differently and the problem of parking in the touristy areas make it a non option. Take the tubes and cabs.
Do go and have fun.

Your Trips To London .... (Reply to this comment)
by kuiipo
It sounds like you and your wife really enjoyed yourselves while visiting there. I have never been there, but I would love to someday. As for renting a car, I sure would not want to as I am aware that they drive on the opposite side of the road and of course, the steering wheel is on the passenger side. I have heard of Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey. I would love to visit both places as well as visiting others you and your wife have visited.

Yes indeed, It was a train. We took it from an underground station in London, in what is known as the tube. Windsor and Eaton are just across a small bridge from each other.
I hope that helps more than confuses.
And yes again, we did have a wonderful time.

Tube to Windsor and Eton? (Reply to this comment)
by amysmum
I was a bit puzzled by your reference to going by tube to Windsor and Eton - perhaps you mean train?
Also, since Mrs Tussaud was French, she needs an extra "me". Sounds like you had a great time, and I enjoyed your perspective on a city I have come to appreciate.

Thanks for the comments. The "Eye" has not yet been done by this man and his wife just yet. Soon we hope.
If you ever come across the pond give a shout. You can land at Kennedy Airport. You know..where the planes come and go from.

to read a visitors view point of our capital.
I was very impressed that you managed to pack quite so many places into your review - my London review has the "Eye" only in it, I wouldn't know where to start otherwise!!
Very very good job. Hope you get to visit London again soon!
Keep on keeping on!

Sure, I'll set up an "entravagant wedding in London" fund, accepting donations immediately ;)
We're actually going to be married a little outside of London, in either a castle or a Queen Anne Manor... making the decision soon :)

Hey Annie,
Wow, very cool about London for your wedding. Why not get a few hundred thousand pounds together and use the Banqueting House. It really is special.
Please keep us up to date on all your plans.
Thanks for the comments,

I love London! (Reply to this comment)

Did you know that the reason the ravens are at the tower with their clipped wings has to do with the monarchy? Something about England being strong so long as the ravens are there- so they make sure they're always there!
Also, the cabbies there are true professionals. They train for five years before being able to drive a London cab, and literally know where everything in the city is. They're considered trained professionals, and make a good living. Pretty different from NYC!
The Millenium wheel, aka the London Eye is amazing- I loved it, and I'm usually petrified of heights!
Great review! I'll be there in 2 more weeks to pick the venue for my wedding :)

There was so much to see and do while there. I do know we missed one of the highlights of the city in not getting to that museum. My wife is an art teacher and it bothered her not to make it there. So much to do, so little time.
Thanks for your comments,

Venture further to the West... (Reply to this comment)
by mattygroves
...and visit Hampton Court Palace where Henry VIII wined, dined and generally was quite naughty.
Amongst the lesser known West London sites, you also have Syon House which, last I checked, included a butterfly house. Then there's Osterley House - until the 1920s, the home of the Earl of Jersey (I think) - the grounds are very pretty.
And lets not forget the parks - across from Hampton Court (a lovely park in itself) you have Bushey Park, and not a million miles away from there there is Richmond Park - both parks contain herds of red and fallow deer, as well as some specific gardens (Bushey has the Woodland Gardens, and Richmond the Isabella Plantation).
And, lest we forget, there's Kew Gardens, attractions include the Palm House, the Temperate House and all sorts of other planty type houses, as well as superb gardens.
Plus, there's Kate's Local Pub, where Kate would be pleased to buy you a pint! Let me know next time you're in town :)
Cheers, Kate

Ah, London . . . (Reply to this comment)

About those cabbies--London cabbies ARE more knowledgeable. They are required to pass demanding qualifying exams, including indepth information on the streets and thoroughfares, the majors businesses they serve, bits and pieces of London's history, and the etiquette required to deal successfully with the public. Too bad our American taxi drivers aren't faced with similar requirements.
Thanks for bringing back lots of fond memories.
Regards,
Darla
