Pros: An amazing site
Cons: Hard to really take it in with all the other tourists about
The Bottom Line: It really is amazing, and I guess no amount of tourists can take that away from it.

| Refined_edge's Full Review: Stonehenge |
On my family's recent trip to London, my sister and I opted to spend a day (and 50 pounds each) on a bus trip to Stonehenge and Bath. I was very excited to see this particular site, both because of its mystery, and to add it to the list of weird things I've made the effort to see while traveling. It sure beats the Oregon Vortex, I'll tell you that!
Stonehenge is quite a ride from London, but the bus was comfortable, and our tour guide had plenty of stories to tell. I tried not to doze too much as the incredible English countryside rolled by.
You cannot get very close to the stones, which I understand completely, but it really is a shame. You can walk in a circle outside the little fence, and I think you still get the effect. It really is massive, breathtaking, impossible. This is where I took most of the pictures on my vacation. It just amazes me the things that people did before TV. "Move some big rocks down from the mountain and stand them upright? Ah, maybe after 'Will & Grace'."
The problem with going as a tour is the time constraint. Our guide didn't require us to stay with him or listen to his stories once we arrived at the site, which was nice. But we were on a schedule. I really would have enjoyed some more time just to sit and look and think and write. I'm glad I went, but I'd like to go back on my own someday.
The gift shop is a little disappointing, just your basic tourist stuff. I was hoping for something more unique and special to take away than generic postcards or a T-shirt. But what can you do?
Stonehenge is certainly worth seeing if you have the opportunity. But if you have the means, try to go on your own (rent a car, maybe). That way, you can spend as much time as you like, and stop and enjoy the sights on the way too.
