Thats almost how I did it. (Reply to this comment)

Except I was traveling alone, so I took a bus trip around England for two weeks. I didn't rent bikes, I borrowed them from hotel staff. Shared lunches and tea with locals and had a wonderful time. That was 1967 --- along time ago.
