If you do ANY museum in Paris, you'll want to do this one. Many people use up a whole day or even two at the Louvre. There are gorgeous pieces of art there, but the Musee D'Orsay is so much better!
If you choose to go to this museum be sure to check in to "tarif reduit" if you are a senior or an student. You will receive a (slightly) discounted price.
When you enter the museum, you'll see tons or works of art that you will recognize from your high school and college art classes including VanGogh's Starry Night. Also, tons of Monet, Manet and Degas. All the greats are there.
This museum, formerly a train station, has been converted into a gorgeous facility. In the lowest level there are tons of beautiful statues. Then, every level has different "rooms" divided by artist.
I'm by no means an art critic, but having studied some art in school, I was thrilled to see the "real thing" close up. I felt like I definetly got my money's worth and enjoyed the event. There were no huge crowds and there was plenty of space to wander around. Several exhibits prohibited the use of flash photography.
This would be a very boring trip for little kids. I'd save it for middle schoolers at teh earliest. Skip the restaurant in the museum. Enjoy lunch at a little cafe before you go in and then spend the afternoon strolling around!
