I visited Paris in June and had only two days. (I managed to squeeze a weekend in Paris during a business trip.) We had to choose only one museum and opted for the Musee d'Orsay because it opened earlier than the Louvre, was likely to be less crowded, and it had been highly recommended by a friend who knew I loved Monet.
We had planned only to spend two hours at the museum, because we were trying to squeeze in so many sights in such a short length of time. I ended up spending more time in the Musee D'Orsay than planned, just because it was so magnificent, and my friends couldn't drag me away on schedule.
We arrived early, about 30 minutes before it opened. That allowed us to be among to first inside and gave us some time to explore some areas of this magnificent building almost alone.
I've always been a lover of Monet, so the first place I headed was the impressionist gallery. I had the most magnificent paintings in the world all to myself for a few minutes before the other visitors arrived.
I felt as if I'd been transformed into another time, another place. His work was so beautiful and intriguing. I almost felt as if I were being pulled into the paintings. It was the most incredible experience. There were so many Monets... everywhere I looked.
If I had been there alone, I would have probably spent the entire day walking from Monet to Monet, soaking in as much as I could.
Unfortunately, reality set in and we walked through as much of the museum as we could. There were so many magnificent paintings and sculptures, it was almost sensory overload trying to take everything in.
The museum itself is very beautiful and open. It is a treat just to stand on the balcony and overlook the first floor.
You can get an audio guided tour that you can carry around. My friends really enjoyed the audio, but I found it more distracting than helpful so I chose to move at my own pace and explore things on my own.
Of course, we had to spend time in the gift shops buying momentos of our visit. I can't begin to do the Musee d'Orsay justice, but I will tell you that if you have limited time and want to see some of the most magnificent art in the world, then you must go to there.
When we drove by the Louvre and saw the huge crowd outside waiting to get in, we were so glad we choose the Musee d'Orsay.
