Opinion Summary
Orson's MUSEE d'ORSAY!
by macresarf1 | Feb 27, 2000
Pros: The greatest single collection of Impressionist Art, housed in a magnificent old railway station.
Cons: Much smaller than the Louvre but still too much to appreciate in one visit.

Thanks, urbanist. Welles did not have quite the heft he had afterwards, he was getting there.

Marvelous museum.

Thanks, again.

Thanks for filling in the history ... (Reply to this comment)

I was in Paris just as they were opening the Orsay, and all the press was praising Valery Giscard d'Estaing for his role in pushing the project through ... But of course, someone of greater heft had to have been behind it ...

Great review.

Cheers,

Yes, finephoto, I agree.

I arrived early, at opening, about 10 o'clock on a Sunday morning.

I missed the restaurant, I must confess, but I had a luncheon reservation.

Merci beaucoup.

Getting there early is important. My wife & were not able to the day we went and there was a very long line.
Not mentioned was the fabulous restaurant!
We also struck up great conversations at lunch and also just hanging over the balcony! A great plus when traveling.

Dear Pam: From my occasional visits with you, I should have been surprised had you not visited Musee d'Orsay.

Glad you liked my review. You prompted me to add to this piece the URL of my review of F FOR FAKE. That is Welles' last completed film as a director. F FOR FAKE is an essay on authorship in
Art, shot in France and Spain, etc. It has some of the magic you and I find in the Musee d'Orsay. For your convenience, and that of others, I quote the URL here:

Merry Christmas.

All the best.

I completely fell in love with the Musee D'Orsay when I visited. Had I known this delightful background my visit would have been even more enjoyable.

When (not if) I get to return to Paris, this will definitely be my first stop.

Thanks for such a wonderful review.

Dear e-pluribus: I recommend Welles' discussion of the film itself in the new Jonathan Rosenbaum edition of This Is Orson Welles.

Tout merci.

thank you macresarf1

I know the great Musee d'Orsay. The only thing you left out are the fine sculptures outside the Musee d'Orsay, which you see as you wait in line.

I am grateful to you for explaining the setting for The Trial. When Welles's film first appeared, I was a student at the Sorbonne. I saw The Trial [for the first of many times] in a theatre on the Champs-Elysees.

I walked away in a trance.

merci bien

I really liked your review! O'rsay is one of my favorite museums, and my favorite painting is there. I also have a review about it. Great job!
