Pros:Huge cemetery with many different types of tombs, crypts, graves & famous people.
Cons:Unfortunately Oscar Wilde's tomb was under renovations while we were there- Bummer!
The Bottom Line: If you are in Paris & have an hour to spare, go to the cemetery. You will be amazed at the size and get to see graves of famous people.
The size and diversity of this cemetery make it a truly remarkable site to remember in Paris.
The main reason for wanting to go there was to visit the grave of Jim Morrison. I bought and followed along with a guided book tour and really enjoyed walking through the many roads and paths through the cemetery. I walked around for a little over an hour, and got to see the highlights - Jim Morrison, Chopin, Gertrude Stein.
There are many different types of structures in this cemetery, which makes it a very interesting walk through. It is easy to see which of the families in the cemetery had a lot of money to spend on their burials, while others either inherited their spots or didn't have much to spend on the sites. I don't recall the exact amount, but from what I read, the amount required to be buried there is extremely high (close to $80,000 USD is what I am thinking).
One of the dissapointments during my trip to the cemetary was the fact that Oscar Wilde's tomb was under renovation. A tarp covered the entire structure, so I was not able to see any of it. Luckily I had a picture in my guidebook that gave me an idea of what was under the tarp.
I know it doesn't seem like a fun thing to do as a tourist, but if you have an hour or so extra I would definitely recommend walking through the cemetery.
