| Moabit's Full Review: Kreuzberg |
I was born in Berlin, Germany in 1967 and I lived there until 1993. I returned for a visit in 1996. My opinion about Kreuzberg has not changed even after the wall came down. Kreuzberg has a lot to see but more to avoid. Nobody I knew wanted to live there unless you had a lot of Turkish friends there. It always seemed like a rather dirty, gray, cold place to go. Of course, Berlin is always and continously changing, so Kreuzberg could be a better place now, but I doubt it. I would not recommend anybody to go there alone, specially not a night. Kreuzberg is well known for its drinking, celebrating, but more for robbing and other crimes. Things like that happen everywhere, but more so in that District of Berlin. It seems like that part of Berlin was always like the forgotten section, cheap apartments, low maintenance. Dirty streets, long forgotten alleys. I am not saying that you should avoid it, but you need to be careful. Maybe because I was born there is the reason why I dislike that part of Berlin so much. When I hear Kreuzberg, I think of a strange, scarry place, that holds no attractions for me whatsoever. I think of other cultures, that look so misplaced in such a cold place. But for more than one reason, you will find a lot of theTurkish Emmigrants or workers there, that are trying to make it like home. If you look for entertainment, you should find that on the Ku-damm, together with bars and pubs. Street entertainers seem to be anywhere, but more so on the busiest street in Berlin.Check out Kreuzberg, because maybe its un-attraction makes it an attraction for Tourist. Some of the wall graffitis are a must see. Kreuzberg if at all, seems more attractiv in winter time, maybe because the white snow gives it a better appearance.
