Pros: Worthy WWII site, off the beaten path. Very impressive. Located in a beautiful park
Cons: not a walkable distance from the center--use U-bahn

Off the beaten path, I recommend going to Treptower Park to see the Soviet War Memorial, with the pinnacle--the monument of the Russian soldier clasping a child to his chest with one hand and holding a swastika-shattering sword in another hand. This Soviet War Memorial is located in Treptower Park in East Berlin, and that's where 5,000 Russian soldiers are buried. One enters through the Arc with a sentence in Russian. In translation it says "The Motherland will not forget her heroes." Many people don't know that, but the USSR actually lost more soldiers during the battle for Berlin than Americans lost in the whole WWII.
Surprisingly enough I found this place virtually deserted. There were only a few tourists here and there. In fact, the silence of this big, and really one-of-a-kind memorial makes one think of the war days. Very impressive.
Treptower Park is a popular place for Berliners to hang out on the weekend. There is a nice pond/lake in the middle of the park and once you are done with sightseeing you can rent a boat (inexpensive) and enjoy the rest of your day like the locals do.
