Pros: Great inner city, perfect for walking
Cons: Not as much to see as I had thought
The Bottom Line: Great city to see if already in Germany, but the trip to see just Frankfurt leaves you wanting to see more.

| bigsteve's Full Review: Frankfurt am Main |
Frankfurt, ah, a weekend destination for me. I had planned a trip to Frankfurt for the weekend from Washington, since I had found an awesome flight price. After arriving in Frankfurt, having booked my hostel, I found the city to be really subdued in contrast to Munich and Berlin, both of which I had recently seen.
Frankfurt is the financial hub of Germany, and walking around on a weekday will make that evident. Businessmen and -women walking around in their suits and ties with their briefcases from office building to office building, as you (the tourist) look up and see skyscraper after skyscraper. The architecture is something at which to marvel, cramming huge building into this historic center.
There are plenty of museums on the Museumsufer and in the Innenstadt. What I highly recommend is getting a 2-day museum pass (students 7,50 DM, adults slightly higher 9,00 DM, I believe). This allows entry into about 20 museums, for free. This is definitely worth is, perfect for a Sunday when the shops are closed, but the museums are still open.
For anyone interested in German literature, Goethehaus is a must. This reconstruction (unfortunately) of Goethe's house portrays a lot of history from the man himself and his family. Located in the middle of the city, a few blocks away, one can find the Cathedral. This church seems very modern on the inside, but it is worth visiting, and the adjoining museum can be seen as well, tracing its history.
The youth hostel on Deutschherrnufer 12, Haus Der Jugend, is reasonable. The rate is about 30 DM per night, and breakfast is of course included. Be sure to have your international hostel membership card, available here in the States, since all German hostels require it. Bring a padlock for the lockers, or a combination lock.
Restaurants are great. The "Rippchen" are great (pork chops). Be sure to go to an apple wine tavern, as this specialty must be enjoyed before leaving Frankfurt. The Germans are more friendly than one imagines through stereotypes, and are very heartwarming. Meet some locals, and talk about anything!
So, if you have a few days in Europe, check out Frankfurt, but I wouldn't make the trip just to see this city alone. Best seen while touring Germany.
