| davestamf's Full Review: Frankfurt am Main |
Looking for a short, affordable break, I booked a weekend for two in Frankfurt, only to have second thoughts once I had made the booking - after all, Frankfurt is a centre of commerce and not to my knowledge, renowned for tourist attractions. I had made the booking on impulse, and only because it was so cheap, but the deal was non-refundable, and so with fairly low expectations, off we went.
No doubt you can tell what's coming next! Yes, we had a truly enjoyable time. The city has a good deal to offer. The central shopping area is huge, and completely pedestrianised, and I believe that on most weekends during the summer months, market stalls are to be found in abundance, and mostly run by semi-amateur individuals selling a broad range of wares. The aroma from an array of open air cooking stands keeps the taste buds active, and the temptation to over-indulge becomes overwhelming. There are many brands of good, pure German beer to choose as well as wine and schnapps. The general atmosphere is of a relaxed carnival. There are many restaurants too, offering a tremendous range of fare at affordable prices.
The old town is within the central area, and although quite small, has a good selection of "old" buildings and is nicely presented for snapshots, and a walk of just a few more yards brings you to the River Main, and an attractive footbridge to more stalls on the opposite bank. The city’s transport system is a network of trams, subway trains and buses, all integrated and efficient. Too and from the airport is easy, however air side is not so good. Allow yourself plenty of time for your flight.
For our 2nd day we found several cheap day-return offers at the main railway terminus, and chose to take the 1 hour journey to Heidelberg, a town noted for its tourist appeal, and well worth a day out. When purchasing a rail ticket, a thorough travel itinerary is also printed and includes all relevant information for your journey, including which platform the train will board.
This turned out to be a lovely weekend and I intend to repeat it before long.
