| Jaylewis's Full Review: Frankfurt am Main |
Well I never visited Frankfurt but I lived there for 4 years though I thought I will give some ideas about what to do in this beautiful city.
If you are visiting Germany or Europe you hardly can pass Frankfurt. If you come by plane, car, train or even by boat you'll be in one of the most important places for commerce, transportation and tourism in Central Europe. Frankfurt is the Gateway to Europe with the largest airport in continental Europe, the busiest train station and a super modern highway system. Frankfurt is the center for international banking, commerce and tourism.
No matter what your preferences are, you will find it in Frankfurt; museums, excellent dinning, historical sightseeing, nightlife, shopping and beautiful surroundings for hiking. Frankfurt has to offer something for every taste and wallet.
Out for the night?
You can choose from a variety of restaurants, like japanese, indian, chinese, greek, mexican, italian cuisine and many more. Or just go for a Frankfurter original 'Ebbelwei' (apple wine) in one of Frankfurt's cellar pubs. These cellar pubs are very old and used to be a part of the cities defense system many, many moons ago. Nowadays they are converted into nice romantic pubs, and most of them serve very good rustic food.A tip on the side, if you plan to spend some time at the cellar pubs, come early as these pubs are always very crowded. But they are nice and cool on hot summer nights. Original Frankfurt atmosphere is located in Sachsenhausen. A whole quarter designated to food, drinking, dancing and music. But if you are looking for a little bit more quieter entertainment, you can visit the opera, theater, street cafes or the movies.
Out for the day?
Frankfurt has many parks, where you can sit and enjoy the activities around you, a large zoo, a botanical garden with the world famous 'Palmenhaus' (palm tree house) where at special times during the year concerts are held, and many indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
Want to go shopping?
Shopping in every price class is offered in Frankfurt whether in the Fressgass, where you can find delicatessen and boutiques, or the Goethestrasse with its exclusive brand name stores, or the Zeil with its major department stores. A tip for those who like ice cream, at the end of the Zeil, near to the 'Alte Oper' you will find the 'Moevenpick Restaurant' who makes one of the best ice creams in Germany. Shoppers will find everything within walking distance in the downtown area.
The city is not so expensive as one might think. Competition is huge which means bargains can be found and selections are very large. Tree-lined traffic-free pedestrian boulevards (like the Zeil) allow relaxing shopping. Getting around is fairly easy as Frankfurt has one of the best subway/bus/train systems I have ever seen. You can practically reach everything by train/subway or bus.
One of my favorite things to do in Frankfurt was always People watching while sitting in an outdoor café. One way to get the feel of life in Frankfurt is to visit one of its many festivals such as the Museumsufer Festival, the Wäldchestag (a big inner city Fair), or one of the lively discos or clubs. If you happen to visit Frankfurt during the Christmas time don't forget to take a walk through the 'Christkindel Markt', a large outside market where you can buy all kinds of original and unique Christmas ornaments, hot Gluehwein' (a wine mixture with a lot spices and fruit juice) and as always good food
