Review Topic: Overview
I was born in Franfurt, Germany, and lived there as any army brat for six years. Although I am now an “Angelino,” having lived in California for 25 years, I still consider Frankfurt my home-away-from home... if not my actual “home“.
As much as I like American cities like New Orleans, San Francisco, Boston, New York, San Antonio, Philadelphia (etc.), I think that Frankfurt, as a travel destination, is hard to beat.
I travel to Frankfurt every few years, being that I have family and friends who live in Germany. No one I know still lives in Frankfurt, but I still enjoy visiting the city for its culture and historic sites.
If you are a fan of romantic-era German literature and authors like Friedrich von Schiller or Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, then Frankfurt is one stop you’ll definitely want to make. If you have two days to spare during a European vacation, there are a couple of places you’ll want to see:
1) The Goethe house -- anyone who has read Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship will want to stop here. Frankfurt is the home of Germany’s greatest writer and universal man of genius. Stop at his birthplace and you will not be disappointed. You will be awed by all the fans who stop here to pay homage to the greatest German hero of all time.
2) The Frankfurt Zoo -- one of the greatest metropolitan zoos in the world. A great place to stop at if you have kids who are not interested in cultural venues or drinking great beer (like Binding or Henninger, two Franfurt brews) or a hearty meal in a Gasthaus.
3) The Museum of Natural History -- you could spend days here exploring one of the finest collections of artifacts in the world. If you like dinosaurs and dinosaur artifacts, this is a must-see museum.
4) The old Opera House -- nearly totally destroyed in WWII. Catch an opera here and you will never forget the experience. This is one of the finest opera venues in the world; there is nothing like it in the United States.
5) Downtown -- shopping is an experience. Come here on a Saturday and enjoy the large pedestrian mall... hundreds of years old and a true cross-roads of civilization with people visiting from all parts of the world.
Frankfurt is one of Germany’s largest cities, and is more charming and memorable than one would ordinarily expect from such a large metropolis. It also has one of the best public transportation systems in the world, so try a visit without your car. Before hopping to Heidelberg, München, Augsburg or Nürnberg... you should spend a day or two here and find out what makes the state of Hessen great.
Frankfurt, Frankfurt... my home town.
Were the skies are gray, but at least they’re not brown! --me.
