| Trouto's Full Review: Greece |
Last year about September, I took my very first overseas trip. I did it big too!! My sister and I booked onto a Contiki tour of Europe! We went to 12 different countries, including Corfu Island, in Greece.
Corfu is the largest of Greece's hundreds of islands. It is also a very popular destination for travelers from all parts of the globe. It is a laid-back, relaxing party island ( I know this sounds contradicting, but its true!).
Our tour was a bit of a whistle-stop adventure, with the longest we stopped at one place was 4 nights...lucky for us, it was 4 nights on Corfu!!! We took a ferry from Bari (Italy), which took about 7 hours. We arrived early in the morning, and we were all dog-tired!!! We spent the first day snoozing on the beach, relaxing our alcohol-abused bodies!!! :-P The next day, our guide took us to a monster water park, with something like 20 odd waterslides (its alot for someone from Perth!). This place was awesome!
Our hotel was very average at the best of times (Contiki tours are done for 18-35 year olds, and its more focused on having fun than comfort levels. They assume you won't be spending much time in your hotel rooms, and for most of the time, they were right!!! ;-). The one massive plus about our hotel was the location. The place was right on the beach, and all of the rooms had balconies facing the Mediterranean sea!! The view...wow. First morning, I woke up very early, and sat on by second floor balcony watching the sun rise over the sea... magic.
There is everything to do on Corfu, and we gave doing everything a shot!!! The shopping area in Corfu town was the best place we found on the trip to snap up a bargain! Things are so cheap in Greece!!! For example: two days earlier in Rome, I paid 3 euro for a small bottle of water. On Corfu, the same size bottle was 30 cents!!!! Clothes, shoes, jewelry, art, spices...anything!!!
Corfu is very much attuned to the need of the tourist. There is a time and a place to see things as they are normally, like the quiet village in southern France where no one speaks English.... but on Corfu, you really appreciate having everything you need close by. Public transport, bike hire, taxi service, are all very convenient on Corfu.
On the last day we spent there, we went out on this Greek guy's boat. George was his name. What a character!!! If you can get past the expletive that he lets out every second word, you will see a fantastic human being! His boat gave us a tour of the surrounding islands, with food and drinks supplied. He is a person I will remember all of my life! His catch cry of "HOU-PA"!!! made me laugh every time!!!
Oh, by the way, "Hou-Pa" is the Greek way of expressing excitement, sort of like "woo-hoo"!!!!!!
I will glaze over the cons of Greece by saying the only bad thing I found was that the plumbing in Greece is awful!!! Um, you are not allowed to flush your toilet paper.... Let me leave it at that shall I???
All in all, Corfu was a fantastic time in my life. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a easy going, relaxing party island!
