the Aran Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean a few miles from the Galway coast. A few miles geographically but a million miles in reality. The Arans are what Ireland was like 100 years ago only with electricity...sometimes :-) You will get an idea of the remoteness of the Arans when you hear the natives talk about "going over to Ireland to do a bit of shopping"
When you get there rent a bike and get around and I guarantee that after a few hours you will feel like you have OD'd on Prozac. The people are very friendly and love to see backpackers but try not to go cross country knocking over stone walls and scaring sheep...there are plenty of trails to keep you interested.
I would recommend that you try to visit in the spring or the fall when there are not so many tourists around and while the days are still long enough to get out and explore.
Bring a waterproof coat, a tolerance for alcohol, your best singing voice and you will fit in very nicely.
