| jallen30's Full Review: Rome |
I've been to Rome several times, for different reasons: business, pleasure (even a honeymoon!) and I can't get enough of "The Eternal City". From its rural outskirts to the madding craze of its city drivers, each aspect is compelling, attractive and hardly describable (is that a word?).
I recommend that everyone visit at least this city once during their lives. I'm from Atlanta, Georgia, and the US exchange rate makes it a fairly inexpensive destination. I can get there for about $500 round-trip and you can make it a week on two to three thousand dollars (stay outside the city!). Most of the attractions are free or very cheap (a couple of bucks) and each is rich in history. The most expensive part of the trip is the hotel rooms, but they aren't unbelievable. And by the way, most Romans understand enough English for you to get by. Even the guys in the little pizza joints on each corner can understand you with a few hand gestures.
So, why Rome? It makes the US look like a newborn. With its beautiful cathedrals and mystifying history, you'll fall in love. The intricate mix of modern city and historical goldmine, keep you wondering as you wander through the city streets. Each corner is special - a fountain by Bernini or a new Church that seems so historically important once inspected. It is the greatest city in the world (despite our materialistic emphasis on New York and London).
Tours are unnecessary here, just get a decent guidebook and go to town. Each tourist attraction (and most restaurants) have people who speak english as well as you or I. So, grab a ticket and enjoy. While you're there - enjoy a couple of days in Florence and a day trip to Pompeii.
Do I recommend Rome? Are you kidding, I require it for a life lived to the fullest. BTW, don't go there in October - everyone is on vacation!
