Pros: No Americans
Cons: Sea is cold
The Bottom Line: Good for couples, but bad for singles. Beaches are pretty but swimming isn't fun. Countryside is lovely and weather is perfect.

| singletravels's Full Review: Sardinia |
I read this board and purchased the Lonely Planet book on Sardinia in preparation for my trip to the island. I flew Ryan Air into Alghero (89 GBP) and stayed at the La Margherita hotel (80 Euro per night).
Ryan Air was fine. I'd been warned about the mad rush to the plane and the advertising bombardment, but I didn't experience anything negative.
La Margherita was okay. It's relatively clean, but there isn't a pool. The pool is important (I'll explain why later.) There is a roof terrace that's very nice. This terrace wasn't described in any literature, and it's the best feature of the hotel.
Food was great. I ate at a lot of different restaurants, and had only a couple of bad experiences. I went to one place over and over because they had pretty good panini (italian sandwiches).
The city of Alghero is lovely. I walked through the streets and along the boardwalk every day. I remember thinking how I hoped the locals appreciated their view of the sea.
My only negative comments stem from two things:
1. Staring at me
2. Cold seawater
Being an American Black Female, I get stared at often when I travel to small cities/towns. However, this was quite extreme. I was in Alghero for 10 days, and I never ceased being a curiosity to the locals. I thought that things would calm down after a few days, but it didn't.
The seawater was very cold. Uncomfortably cold. People were in the water, but no one was swimming. I didn't notice this until I walked to the water's edge and chilly water rushed up over my feet and ankles. So the water looks great, but you don't want to be in it. This is why you want a hotel with a pool.
In the end, I would say it's worth a visit, if only to get away from place with a Starbucks or a 7-11. It's also very beautiful with good food and wine.
I will say that Alghero is better for couples (or two friends). People look at you weird when you're alone.
Happy traveling!
