Pros: Relaxation central....Unspoilt by tourism, turquoise sea, pearly white beaches
Cons: None, really - only wish it was closer!
The Bottom Line: Sardinia would be my top recommendation for couples who want a cheap, get-away-from-it-all, relaxing, and, most of all, romantic week-end away, it has everything you need.

From touch down, I fell in love
.. The resort of Alghero was blissfully unspoilt, rural and to my mind absolutely gorgeous.
The airport is very basic- it has been years since I walked off the plane, straight across the tarmac to the terminal. The sun came out and welcomed us in typical Sardinian style as we exited the terminal and I felt myself relax into holiday mode.
The Sardinians are warm, friendly, charming people... who unfortunately cant drive! Do whatever you can to avoid Taxis, unless, of course, you are an adrenalin junkie with a death wish! Regrettably, unless you are hiring a car, you have no option to get a taxi to the town of Alghero.
On a recommendation, I had booked into a hotel on the beach, St Julian, a two star family run hotel, again it was very basic, but clean and cheap. If you expect a pool bar, elevator and plush rooms go to the Carlos IV, where you can experience five star luxury, but for me I wanted something a bit more authentic, and I was on a budget! The St Julians location was excellent, midway between Alghero new town and Alghero old town and just across the road from the beach
and boy, what a beach! Pearly white, fine sand lapped by a crystal clear turquoise blue sea
It was heaven, all my plans to explore the rest of the Island were driven from my mind, I just wanted to enjoy the sun and listen to the sound of the waves caressing the beach!
I did explore the old town of Alghero, which is a maze of little streets, leading to who knows where, but it really is fun to explore, you never know what you will find around the next corner. The shopping is great shoe heaven, if like me, you just cant have enough shoes, dont forget your plastic!
I cant forget the food; the mix of cultures (Sardinia having been under the rule of many other cultures over the years) comes right out in the food. Anywhere you eat, from the most stylish of restaurants to the hole-in-the-wall Pizza take-a-ways, your taste buds can be assured of a flavour explosion! Try the local pasta, sea food and dont miss the local salami pizzas - 'totally orgasmic' as one of my travel companions put it!
Sardinia would be my top recommendation for couples who want a cheap, get-away-from-it-all, relaxing, and, most of all, romantic week-end away, it has everything you need. Get up late, lay on the beach all day, maybe do some shopping if you are feeling energetic, then take a moon lit walk along the sea shore to any one of Algheros fabulous restaurants for a spectacular dinner. Who could want more? Not me! I am busy planning my next trip!
Cheap flights were available from Ryan Air; if you book in advance you can get a round trip for under £20! Hotels range from £20 sterling, per person, per night to £75. The level of service is good wherever you go, but with hotels, the more you pay the more luxuries you get! A three course meal with local wine (highly recommended) cost, on average, £15 per head and is fantastic value for money. I visited Alghero in late September and the weather was glorious, but it did get a bit chilly in the evening.
