| marniejoyce's Full Review: Sardinia |
I stayed on the northern coast of Sardegna - near Porto Torres - in August, 1998. The water is truly the most incredible color, particularly on the "Emerald Coast", where the famous "pink Beach" can be found.
The food in Sardegna is also some of the best in the world. Particularly the gnocchetti Sardi (small pasta in a tomato and lamb sauce) and siadas, a dessert comprised of sweet ricotta cheese in pastry, fried and drizzled with honey. The highlight was an enormous 8 course meal eaten at a farm - look for the out of the way places for the best treasures!
The people of Sardegna are very warm. In August, the coasts are full of tourists (mainly Italians), and the service establishments handle the large loads very well. I was with a group of several hundred friends - not an organized tour type of thing (strange but true), mainly Italian, but a handful of Icelandic people and 3 Americans (myself being one of them). Mostly we traveled about in groups of 6-10, and there was never a problem with our group being too large. Campgrounds on the beaches are very popular summer vacations in this region, and it is not uncommon for large groups of friends to travel together.
Although I classified this as a "budget" vacation, spending under $100 daily, this was not from an attempt to conserve funds, but rather because the prices for everything are very low, and staying in the campgrounds was extremely cheap. Local hotels are not costly either, however.
A wonderful summer spot, an uncommon beach vacation.
