Seeing pictures of Venice is a lot different from being there. The pictures that I have seen depict a beautiful, magical, scenic city. In reality, the city is definitely beautiful. However, the water is filthy, and many times during the walk through Venice, I was met with the sour smell of pollution.
I imagine tourism has taken it's toll on Venice, as it has so many other places. However, it the pollution does not detract too much from the experience. It is a unique and wonderful place to visit. Like so many other cities in Italy, be prepared to do a lot of walking. To travel through Venice requires walking. You have the option of renting a gondola, but they tend to be expensive, and you miss a lot. There is plenty of shopping and the architecture is unique. The narrow walkways take you right past the doorways of Venices residents.
Be sure to have enough money on hand for a boat ride back, once you reach Saint Mark's Square. If you don't, you have a lot of walking to do to get back. Saint Marks is an interesting attraction, and has a tower that you can visit. The square is extremely large, and is crowded with pigeons. The pigeons will roost on your head if you start feeding them.
There are two bridges that I remember. The Ponte De Sospieri (spelling?) and the Ponte D'Oro. The Ponte De Sospieri is the wish bridge. If you make a wish as you cross the middle, it is supposed to come true...I didn't wish for anything, so I can't vouch for it. The other bridge, the Ponte D'Oro is the Gold Bridge. There are jewelery shops galore, as well as other merchandise for sale in shops built into the bridge. If you take the Grand Canal back from Saint Mark's, you can get a good photograph of the Ponte D'Oro.
Aside from the pollution, I think Venice possesses exceptionally unique beauty. I would suggest that any trip to Italy include a day in Venice.
