I recently travelled to Amsterdam in April and was looking forward to visiting the Van Gogh museum. Although in no way do I consider myself an art fanatic, I am the type of person who enjoys and attempts to appreciate art. I've seen many of Van Gogh's works throughout my lifetime, in various museums across the US, and now the world. I have to say that if I travelled to Amsterdam solely for the museum, I would have been sorely disappointed.
I visited the museum about lunchtime, and it was mildly crowded, yet still bearable. My companions and I found it helpful to walk and view the art against the standard flow of people. As I perused the paintings, I couldn't help but notice that there were as many paintings by other artists as Van Gogh. I understand this is to get a feel for who inspired him and vice-versa, but the name of the museum is "The Van Gogh Museum."
In no means should this persuade you to not visit the museum, I just wanted to warn all who were considering not to expect as much as I did.
Although I didn't buy much, the gift shop is worth browsing around in. There is a fantastic selection of art and art appreciation books. As well, if you purchase a poster, they place it in handy-dandy little carrying case so your poster isn't harmed during the remainder of your travels.
Enjoy the museum, but don't come overly anticipatory. You might be a bit disappointed as I was.
