When you plan your trip to St. Petersburg, it would be a mistake not to leave time for visiting numerous palaces located in the city's suburbs. It's like visiting Paris without visiting Versailles.
St. Petersburg has several great day trips to offer. I'll list just three.
1) Petergof. This is the suburb where Peter the Great's palace (Petrodvorets) is located. This is one of the very best palaces not only in Russia, but in the whole Europe. The summer is by far the best time for your visit, because you can enjoy beautiful fountains that are in line with Versailles fountains. One may even argue that Petrodvorets' fountains are more impressive than Versailles', because they are lined up close to each other, while Versailles fountains are spread out. In any case, Petrodvorets is not to be missed.
2) Pushkin. This is the suburb where the palace of Catherine the Great is located. Absolutely beautiful. I personally have hard time deciding which I like better Catherine's or Peter's palace. In any case, don't miss it.
3) Pavlovsk. This is the suburb where Paul's (Catherine's son) palace is located. Compared to the other two, it is probably less impressive and well known. You can certainly get an overdoze of art, so if you still have time and desire, Pavlovsk is still a good bet. Also, I believe it is located on the Pushkin train line, so technically you can visit Pavlovsk and Pushkin in one day. If you only have time for one, go to Pushkin.
And, finally, don't miss the Winter Palace in the heart of St. Petersburg. But, I'm sure you already knew that.
