Pros: Nicely appointed rooms, reasonably priced, GREAT hosts, good food, peaceful
Cons: out of the way if you don't want to drive or prefer lively nightlife
The Bottom Line: Great for anyone! Craigdarroch Lodge is an excellent choice for a country bed and breakfast! Excellent service for the price when compared to the U.S. Visit at www.select-scotland.co.uk/homepage.htm

I put so much time and effort into choosing just the right place to stay for my pilgrimage to Scotland that I want to share this with you.
If you want to experience true hospitality, old fashioned charm, and, in my e-pinion, the heart of the Scottish Highlands, then you must stay at Craigdarroch Lodge in Contin. http://www.select-scotland.co.uk/homepage.htm
I was on a two-week trip (August, 2000) to the Highlands and wanted a place centrally located so that we could tour the North - I wanted a home base. Situated just 15 to 20 minutes west of Inverness and the airport, it is away from the city life.
Our room was large, ensuite (that means with a private bath), and decorated to feel like home. Julia, the proprietor, kept the room well serviced with extras - teas and coffee. Breakfast was included and made to order. Dinner was by reservation and absolutely delicious. There is a small bar for your evening retreat and sherry! There's even a library with big comfy sofas and chairs with books of all sorts and board games.
Once when we left for an overnight stay, Julia met us in the parking lot upon our return. We felt as if we had returned home! She did many wonderful things for us - like packed a small breakfast and coffee thermos when we left early.
Nearby you can hike to a sparkling lake so pure that it supplies the lodge with drinking water! You can walk to the streams and see waterfalls and awake to a crowing rooster from the farm next door. Contin is a small, small town with the basics of necessities - a small grocer and gas station. Less than 10 minutes north is Strathpeffer and beyond that Dingwall. Dingwall is a lovely town with many shops and a larger grocery and restaurants. Beauly is about 10 minutes south and is lovely with shops and pubs. We spent several nights down there joining the locals in song and brew!
I'll write another review about our tour of the Highlands but I would be remiss not to give a recommend to the Craigdarroch Lodge!
P.S. You really must hire a car to enjoy the Highlands. Don't be hesitant - it was easy to drive in the Highlands. Just be sure you understand the rules and TRAFFIC CIRCLES before you get there!
