My husband and I just returned from a trip to Spain. We decided to go to Mallorca and Menorca after much research on the web....
Menorca is the northern most of the 4 balearic islands. And the second least commercial after Formentera. Its a small island with population of about 70,000. There's not much information on the web about this island as there is about Ibiza and Mallorca. There are several major towns on the island and each one has its own unique personality. There's much history to the island as well from all the different conquests. One definitely needs a car to get around on the island although it only takes about an hour to travel from one end to the other. We stayed in Cala Galdana which is a small town on the southern part of the island. The beaches here were beautiful. THere are also many hidden beaches that you can walk to. There are no trails for cars and could take you a good hike of 45minutes. But they are worth it. Isolated and filled with natural beauty. If you go to Menorca, try staying at a Bed and Breakfast. you can get a listing by making a request to the tourism office for the balearic islands. The only set back was finding food. I'm not really into Spanish food and that's all they had on this small island!
Mallorca:
This is the largest of the four islands. Much more commercial, but still worth the visit. The beaches here are great too. Just more crowded than Menorca. There are many things to see on this island from the beaches to natural caves to the Majorica Pearl Factory. But its great just to relax. There were plenty of restaurants and great variety of food! the people were very friendly and there was a nightlife (probably not as much as Ibiza's). Most of the toursits seemed to be from Britian or Germany.
We went to these islands in July and that is peak season so hotels were expensive and Mallorca was crowded.
