Best tapas bars in Sevilla

Written: Nov 13 '00
Pros:The best tapas bars in Seville
Cons:Fake touristic bar

Review Topic:  Restaurants

I have been living in Seville for 30 years and I really feel very bad when I see some poor tourist going to the wrong bars to enjoy typical Spanish "tapas". If you let me do so, I would like to guide you through the best tapas bars in Seville. I do not have anything to do with any of this bars, appart from being a customer and enjoy their wonderfull dishes.

First of all, do not go to any bar that is full of tourists. I am not trying to be patronizing. Only would I like to be useful for you. If you go to a bar crowded with tourists probably you will be offered a paella tapa or some kind of tapa prepared to deceive tourists (do not eat paella in Seville, it is not the best city in Spain to eat it).

Perhaps you have visited the cathedral and the Giralda. There are plenty of fake typical andalusian bars close to the cathedral. You can skip them. Even the bull head you will see on the walls is fake. Please go walking donwn to the Arenal (5 minutes walk) and ask there for the bar Taberna Extremeña. There you will enjoy the best migas and jamon from the Extremadura region, and you can have a great lunch for say 10$. Appart from the migas, I would recommend you some "queso de cabra" and "potaje extremeño".

For sure, you have to go to Triana, a neighbourhood across the bridge over the Guadalquivir river. This is the neighbour of the best "toreros" and flamenco dancers. On the right hand once you have crossed the bridge, in Calle Castilla, you have to visit Casa Manolo, a traditional place for having great home made tapas in the Triana style. I recommend you "Brocheta de Mero" with a couple of pints of Cruzcampo beer, the only beer you have to drink in Seville, a light and refreshing lager that really goes well with tapas.

I am sure you will spend one evening walking the romantic Parque de Maria Luisa. A park designed in the XIX century and in which most of the seville citizens have stolen the first kiss from their first girlfriends/boyfriends. If you go out from this park from the door close to Felipe Segundo street, you are very close to my favourite tapas bar: La Monteria. There are so many delicious tapas in this bar, that is difficult to choose a few. You can not skip a tapa of Salmorejo. Go afterwards for some fried fresh fish and calameres. You do not have to bother about the drink: a fresh pulled Cruzcampo beer will be waiting for you before you have thought about it.

I really would be satisfied if this recomendation is useful for those American considering visiting Seville. And do not forget: escape from those bar full of tourists. The hidden treasure of Seville are for those who escape from the obvious.
