Choose Teruel and Escape from Tourist

Written: Nov 19 '00
Pros:Cheap and Nice Place, no Tourists
Cons:Cold, a rather severe Town

Review Topic:  Sights & Attractions

Teruel is not a favoured place for tourists or your typical Spanish weekend tourist. Teruel is the cheapest and one of the smallest provincial capitals in Spain. It's a very cold place, about the coldest capital in Spain. In Teruel you won't find German or British beer or wine guzzlers or gaudy Japanese tourists. You will find a city divided in the Old Medieval town and the New City. In the Old City you will find many tapas joints and very good restaurants that could well be the ones offering he best value for money in Spain.
Try the Parador de Teruel, a Palace converted into a high class hotel built on top of a knoll overlooking the city. Visit the Plaza del Torito and the alleys where young people gather to talk and drink. Try the food, very famous ham and sausages, lamb, excellent stews, try the Somontano wine from a neighboring province.
In Teruel you are in Deep Spain. People are not so callous when communicating with tourists. There you will treated warmly though Teruelenses are a rather hermetic lot.
I recommed Teruel for all those tired of coastal Spain and wanting to flee from crowded places. Teruel is relatively near from Barcelona and Zaragoza and there are many interesting places nearby, such as Albarracin, Andorra de Teruel and many others.
