| babyblue552's Full Review: Toledo |
In the beginning of June my family and I spent about two weeks in Spain. Our last stop was in Toledo, a very hilly city with beautiful narrow streets full of great food, history, and culture. The people of Toledo were especially welcoming to tourists, going out of their way to point us in the right direction. Our waiter at La Ermita restaurant even explained the entire menu to us in English. I would highly recommend the La Ermita restaurant. La Ermita sits on top of a hill overlooking the entire city of Toledo and if you go a little early (around 9) you can see the sun set over the city. Some excellent dishes included black rice, foie gras, grouper, and a marzapan selection for desert. If you like to shop, Toledo is a great shopping town full of small stores. The narrow streets are full of gold stores where you can buy the famous Toledo gold. You can get factory made gold for a low price or walk around until you come buy an artisan's shop where you can see the artisans making the gold pieces right there. Marazapan is also very famous in Toledo and can be found all over the city. Toledo also has one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Spain. I also recommend staying at the Parador in Toledo. The Paradors are a type of hotel in Spain that used to be state-run and can be found all over Spain. These were the best hotels we stayed in on our vacation, and not the most expensive. Toledo was one of the favorite cities we visited. I would recommend that you avoid driving at all costs in the city of Toledo. My family had a car during the trip, but while in Toledo we left the car at the hotel and took a taxi to and from the center of the city. The streets are extremely narrow, very winding, and very hilly, and in many streets we had to move into doorways to let cars pass. I also recommend that you visit in late May or early June beacause after that, although dry, it becomes unbearably hot.
