Austrian city with European culture

Written: Jan 22 '00
Pros:Beautiful culture, lots of fine restaurants, cheap living
Cons:Not exactly clean, problems with public transportation

Chernivtsi is one of those places in Eastern Europe, where you can still feel the culture of old Europe and enjoy the contemporarity of modern life as well. This city is more than 500 years old, and you actually feel it in the streets and in the spirit of it. There are several districts of the city, each one bearing its certain culture.

Downtown (Centr) - one of the most cultured places, includes the architecture built by the Austrians that managed to survive during the World War 2. Place for many restaurants, gift shops and just places to see.

Yuzhka - the district to the South of Chernivtsi, just a bunch of Soviet-styled apartment blocks, no worthy places to see, several factory facilities are located in that area.

Graviton - one of the most criminalized regions of the city, but the only night club in the city, called Sova (The Owl) is located there. Also used to be a hotbed for industrial park when the Soviets ruled the place.

Klokuchka - one of the poorest regions of the city, not far from the train stations, the only advantage of living there is being close to downtown.

Sadgora - a big village on the north of Chernivtsi, somehow managed to get into the city limits, nothing to see, nothing to visit.

Prospekt - the area not far from downtown, the location of many residential areas and several markets, usually a busy place throughout the day.
