| CoachB's Full Review: Holy See (Vatican City) |
Being the catholics that we are, obviously we wanted to see the Vatican when we were in Rome (Roma) last summer.
We were there on a Wednesday. The Pope was going to make his appearance but we did not want to spend our day waiting to see him when we'd all seen him in the United States. We only had one day to see Rome.
The lines to see the Pope started forming at 7 am.
Our hotel was close to St. Peters so we thought we would be smart and start there. It was supposed to get hot so we would take advantage of it being cool inside.
We approached the gates to enter only to be told by the guards that we could not enter because our shorts did not go below our knees. We had been warned prior to going to the Vatican that the women's shoulders had to be covered and our shorts had to be longer. We all complied with these two requirements so we were unhappy when we were turned away. What was even more frustrating was that women who were wearing dresses and skirts that barely covered them were allowed entrance--dress/skirt length didn't matter. We HAD to see the Vatican.
We decided to go see the rest of the sites around Rome. While we were walking from place to place, we kept our eye out for any inexpensive option to our wardrobe. As luck would have it, we came across a little shop on our way back from lunch that had pants for the equivalent of $7. We all bought matching pants so we could enter St. Peters.
I have videotape footage of all of us standing on the steps of St. Peters pulling on matching pants. We were thrilled to be doing this since it was 100 degrees with 100% humidity.
The statue of St. Peter has almost had its foot rubbed off from all of the tourists touching it.
Once our interior tour was complete, we set up the 320 stairs to see the Papal Gardens from atop St. Peters. They are really beautiful.
I look forward to taking my kids (when they are a lot older) to see the Vatican.
